Dear Students, We are quickly approaching the end of our pre-enrollment study program. In order to promote greater interaction between students-students and students-teachers I have changed the format of the FILA Message Board. Please post your weekly reports in the appropriate thread according to the week/date (listed in the title of the thread) and read your classmates threads. Once you have made your posts please comment on your classmates reports. The teachers will read your posts but we will now share in the responsibility of providing feedback with each other. Remember to sign your posts with your names and let's continue to work hard until the end of the study program (March 27th). Good Luck!
Sincerely,

Hello!
Vocabulary I learned 25 words. When I memorized these words, I memorized sentences using these words. To me, It's really hard work, but I will continue it! Reading I read Abraham Lincoln written by Mike Venezia. Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth president of United States of America. His famous speech is "Government of the people, by the people, for the people." He was born in Kentucky in 1809. His family was poor, and they lived in a small log cabin. He couldn't go to school everyday, because he had to work hard, but he continued to study. He became a lawyer in 1836. His job performance was great, and many client came to him. But he had a question to the southern state's politics, and he decided to become the president. In those days, the southern state's people felt that owning slaves was their legal right. But many northern state's people felt that slavery was very wrong and should be stopped. They started wars called Civil war1 and 2.The northern state was win, but Abraham Lincoln was killed by John Wilkes Booth who was the southern actor when he watched the play.
I really not know the history of United States, so I want to read more history books. And I want to know more details of Abraham Lincoln. Listening
I listened Voa. The tittle is" Robots to make iPads and iPhones ". The U.S. company Apples hire Hon Hai which is China company to make Apple's products. In the Hon Hai company's factories introduce machines which make Apple's products. About 70 percents machines occupy in factories, and this makes the problem of labor disputes. In the pasts five years, labors couldn't find their jobs and some labors killed theirselves. So some people who live in China don't choose their jobs in the factories and continue to study in university. They want to work in steady jobs.
In my opinion this problem is similar to the Japan's problem. In Japan, about 40 percent people are dispatched workers. Dispatched workers have problems. For example they have no future prospects or unstable employment.Japan government must to solve these problems without delay.
Writing This week, I wrote my daily in English. This trial is really hard to me ,but I felt that it's good for my learning English. Ma best words counts was 234. I will writing diary and quick write!
Thank you for reading!

Hi,everyone, I'm Joy!
Vocabulary: I learned over 70 new words this week. I was surprised that the word " converse" has two meanings. If I use this word usually, it means "to have a conversation with someone". However, if I use this word with "the", so that "the converse" means "the converse of a fact, word, statement etc is the opposite of it". I would like to learn other words which have different meanings.
Reading: I read a book "Cleo" as I did last week. I mentioned I couldn't understand this context. I wanted to understand this stoy deeply, but I couldn't. Still, I have some questions. Who is the main character in this story? However, I found my favorite phrase. It is " a ponytail that was perched high on one side of her head". It is easy to imagine that situation. I have pages that I haven't read yet, so in the rest pages, I would like to understand this book.
Listening: I listened an interview. Its responder is Teilor Swift. She is my favorite singer. She is so cute and cool. I often listen to her music not only because I like her, but also because I think it is good to study English. In the interview, her responded different questions. For example, "What is your favorite food?" and "Do you like to do housechore?" Her answers are interesting and positive. I am encouraged by her words. The interviewer also asked her about her private. If I were her, I would not able to the question. It was about her boyfriend. However, she responded with smile. I thought she was strong.
Writing: I wrote 7 quick write. I wanted to write over 190 words in all quick types. I could write over 200 words in 6 titles. Next goal is to write over 230 words.
Thank you!

It's about ten years later,Harry was fostered out to Dursley's family. But he was oppressed them and live a life of misery. His room is like a junk room. Also he treated badly... I'm looking forward to read Chapter 3 because a wizard school will come into the Chapter 3.
Listening:I watched TED Talks entitled "What can save the rainforest?Your used cell phone"by Topher White. He explained how we can save the rainforest with old phone. When he visited the rainforests of Borneo,He found the magnificence of the rainforests. Also the rainforests has a lot of beautiful sounds. For example, the chirps of birds, the buzz of cicadas, the banter of gibbons and so on.However,in fact the illegal logging operation was rapidly destroying the rainforests. So,he tackled illegal logging with new system. It's really simple. It's a very wonderful speech and I like the idea.I hope it will spread the world.
Writing: I did 3 quick writes this week. -Write about "What do you want to do this summer vacation"(211 words) There are so many things I want to do this summer vacation. So I could write with many words. -"What is your favorite holiday?Why?(199 words)I write about Children's Day. -"Could you survive for 1 week without your mobile phone?(185 words)

Post by Mikaela on Mar 13, 2015 20:28:06 GMT 9
Hi,everyone. I’m Mikaela.
This is my weekly report. Vocabulary I learned 50 new words this week.
Reading I read “Matilda” this week again. Matilda had a strange power that anyone didn’t have. She was able to move something without touching. The teacher Miss. Honey, who treated Matilda kindly thought her parents neglected her and noticed she was different and genius child. Miss. Honey wanted the parents to understand how nicest child their daughter was. But they didn’t try to do. And also, there was a teacher who was mean to Matilda and afraid of her talent. Her name is Miss. Trunchbull. But she had a secret couldn’t tell anyone and she kept being hard on children. One day, finally Matilda’s boring days changed for good. At first, Miss. Trunchbull’s secret came out through school by Matilda’s power. And she ran away out of the town. And Matilda’s parents moved to Spain to escape from punishment for a crime they’ve done at work. Matilda was left, but Miss. Honey made up her mind to take Matilda in her house.
Listening I watched a ted talk that is “Be a great opportunity maker” by Kare Anderson. She shared the story which is connecting with others makes your chance. It is a little difficult to understand the whole story though. Building relationships between people who have quite different background is a help you can make a chance. I think what she mentioned is interesting and new idea for me.
And next I watched “the best gift I survived” by Stacy Kramer. She described the gift in the life. Her life changed completely by the gift. She got a brain tumor. But she shared the story that through this experience and gift, she knew her life would have a new meaning, such as peace, health, serenity, happiness, nirvana. I think the thing that you don’t expect and want overwhelms yourself, but that will be an unexpected gift for your life. No matter how hard that is, that is worth having and overcoming.
Writing I worked on 7 quick types and wrote about 170 words on each of topics this week.

The calculation surprised me, but I thought I did my best on this week! I want to keep learning and reviewing words. Reading: I’m reading “Skyjack!” by Tim Vicary. When I found a cover of it the day before yesterday, I was sure it must be interesting. I just started reading, so I didn’t know details, but I guessed two men are heroes. They had their wives and children each other, and they were government officials. One man, Carl asked a young cabin crew who looked like him daughter to take a newspaper. She was very quiet, so I was certain that she became a hostage of criminals would appear, but my expectation was betrayed. Certainly, criminals appeared, but she (a quiet young cabin crew) was a member of them! I’m interested in this story, I will tell you on next report! Listening: I watched some movies of TED this week, I introduce “Legos for grownups” by Hillel Cooperman. Do you know Legos? You probably see them at least once in your child food I think. It can make 3D modeling and rendering of Logos, and make movies of using Legos! You can watch them on YouTube. Then, qualities of Legos are so high, for example Titanic, a spaceship, a Western house and others. Legos are toys not only for children also for adults, I still like playing with Legos. Hi,everyone.I'm Selena.
Vocab:I leaned 24 words.
Reading:At last I finished reading 'MUSIC'!!!!! Contents of this book is a little difficult fir me.,but I could have new thing. This book said that studying music is studing ourselves and music can be means of both understanding other cultures and misunderstanding them. For when we listen music of other places,we assume it that we understand other people without trying to find out what they will say.Music can establish connection between cultures, but it cannot abolish cultural difference.I love music so I will communicate other cultures by music, but I won't pretend to understand them immediately.
Writing:I'm sorry but I couldn't do quick writes... Next week I try to do every day.

Hello everyone! I`m Keith.
I was stimulated with classmates` and teachers` threads. Especially Aurora said her opinion to the matter which she chose. It`s really good to practice writing.
Vocabulary I learned 38words this week. One of words I learned, "red tape". It means "Formalism" because former times, people tied the official document with red tape. And it was not efficient. So "red tape" means "Formalism".
Reading I read "The Gift of the Magi" written by O.Henry. O.Henry, the author of this story, was a pen name. His true name is William Sidney Porter. He died of cirrhosis of the liver in New York in 1910. He wrote many famous stories.
Della, who had beautiful hair, was troubled in how to make money to buy Christmas present for Jim, husband. Jim had a Gold Watch without good chain. She determined to sell her hair and buy a watch chain. However.......... if you will read this book, you will able to make hart warming. I was moved.
Listening I could`t learned listening well. I listend to "The Last Leaf". I don`t know who speaks but I know that it`s written by O.Henry. At the first time I listened this story, I could`t understand especially idioms. It is story of a sickness girl and her life.
Writing I changed to typing. I have a confidence to type. So I could write funny. I wrote 4writes and the average of this week was 160words. And I wrote 197 words at most. I want raise my average to 190words.
Thank you!

Hi everyone! This is my report for this week. Vocabulary: I studied 15 words this week. I was busy preparing my trip to japan and was not able to learn many words. But I am doing reading and listening everyday. Reading: I am finishing the book "The First Phone Call from Heaven" by Mitch Albom. The people receiving phone calls from their deceased family members and friends are facing different problems. The main character, Sully, who did not believe the phone calls were real started to investigate the incident that was happening around. He is getting more clues that people are actually being cheated on heaven exists and that it is not their family members calling them from heaven. I have to read it till the end to find out the truth and I can't wait to know what happened! I came across this article while visiting ted.com and I wish to share it here. It is an article worth reading. It talks about the environment and what pollution nowadays will cause in our future. There are ways for us to prevent further damage to our planet earth! Please do take some time and read the article. ideas.ted.com/the-9-limits-of-our-planet-and-how-weve-raced-past-4-of-them/ Listening: I like listening to BBC Learning English. I am gaining lots of knowledge from listening to their 6 minutes English audios. Too bad they are not updating it anymore! The most recent audio I've listened to is titled "The Secret of Happiness". Being happy is what everyone wants. But what is happiness and most importantly how to be happy. The audio said that happy people live an active and rewarding life. They constantly engage in activities that provide them satisfaction in life. They also said that wiser people who are better at dealing with life also tend to be happier. I think all of us have our own definition on what happiness is. My happiness is able to accomplish the goals and tasks I've set for myself! Writing: I changed my method from writing by hand to typing. I can write up to 355 words by typing. My quick types now ranged from 246 to 355 words. I was amazed by the difference in typing and writing by hand. Hope I can improve my contents in writings. Thank you for reading!

Hello. Hope everyone is joyful! Isabella, 'The Wizard of Oz' is great. Though I've never read the book, I have seen the movie. Perhaps I'll have to give it a try. Vocabulary: This week I learned 18 words. Some of the vocabulary are from books and others are from articles I've read. I like learning vocabulary that is better fit in everyday language, opposed to complex words because they can often sound awkward or verbose. Reading: Currently reading 'The Sea of Tranquility' by Katja Millay. I just started reading this yesterday and it's not that bad. I'm only about 6 chapters in so far. I've actually been in a book slum for a while now and I need more book recommendations. Anyways, it's a young adult fiction about an emotionally sensitive girl with a dark past, Nastya Kashnikov, and a lonely boy, Josh Bennett. Nastya had just moved to an new town in her aunts house and she is just starting her senior year of high school. Nastya doesn't talk; a mute who chooses not to speak, because whatever happened to her in her past created her to become silent. She is beautiful, but purposely makes her self intimidating wearing black and black makeup over her eyes so that she draws negative attention. She's not really interested in anyone except for Josh, who is just as isolated as she is. Listening: There was a TED Talk on "Hidden Miracles of the Natural World" by cinematographer and director Louie Schwartzberg. It was quite fascinating because Louie demonstrates and talks about the unseen beauties that are imperceptible to the human eye. By using technology, art, and science he captures breath taking images such as the time-lapse of earth and the patterns in the clouds. He takes movements too slow and speeds them up or takes images from high speed and slows them down. Not only are these images visually appealing, but people can learn from them and can even create different kinds of technology. For example, new technology can be created through evaluating the movements of a dragonflies wings. When you slow down the image people can see how and what makes a dragonfly fly so well. Louie also shows images to a microscopic level and this whole world of microscopic organisms. With the right tools Louie gives new perspective that creates new wonders and discoveries. Writing: I didn't do much writing this week, I did 3 quick writes with about 350 words each.

Hi everybody! So great to see we have new members in this community! Welcome Kristine, Samantha and Solomon! =) Mr Miyagi and Mr Malcolm, thank you for the recommendations and feedback. I’ll do my best! This week I could keep the pace from the past one, but I honestly believe that I’m getting better and better as this self-study became a daily practice. Vocabulary: This week I could learn 32 words. There is a particular word that I most liked that it is ‘enshrine’. This word is a verb, formal, and means to officially record something such as an idea or principle in a document so that it cannot be ignored. For instance: “These fundamental freedoms are enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights”. I think this will be a word that we are going to use a lot, at least read it a lot… Won’t we? =P Reading: This week I decided to starting reading news as well. I’m finishing one of the Bukowski chronicles, which takes the title of the book: 'Portions from a Wine-Stained Notebook'. When I finish it, it let you know about my impression. Okay… The news which most caught my attention was the one I read at The Guardian Online. The headline is: ‘Norway's giant fund increases stake in oil and gas companies to £20bn’. You can find the complete news in the following link: www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/mar/13/norways-giant-fund-increases-stake-in-oil-and-gas-companies-to-20bnThis news talks about the massive investment in oil and gas, which are sources of non-renewable energies and pollutants. Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global (GPFG) has increased a lot in terms of this sort of investment; many analyses has shown that there are already several times more fossil fuels in proven reserves than world leaders have pledged to burn in order to avoid catastrophic global warming. Thus, the point is that many scientist and NGOs say that those great investments are a risk because the Norwegians politicians should be investing in renewable sources of energy as the US, China, and Europe are doing. So, not only is this an environmental problem, but it’s becoming an economic one. Lately, WWF received an updated statement from GPFG in which is written the requirement that they will work out to limit global warming to 2C, leading to sharp cuts in carbon emissions. Samantha Smith, Leader, WWF Global Climate and Energy Initiative said: “If other funds follow suit, this could be the start of the tipping point the world needs to stop financing polluting energy, and start financing a better world”. On the other hand, big oil companies, such as ExxonMobil and Shell, say they don’t believe that the world’s governments will submit themselves in deep cuts of carbon emission. Personally I believe that this change from fossil fuels to renewable sources of energies will not be easily and quickly done. However, I defend the opinion that it be implemented as soon as possible in order to increase the chances of reverse the tragic situation of the Earth. Listening: I’ve watched 5 TED Talks and there one that I specially liked! It’s called “Play this game to come up with original ideas”, talk by Shimpei Takahashi. What I found most interesting is that the talk is in Japanese with subtitles in English! Okay… I know that I should be practicing English, but I found very motivating to study something you like. Since last year I’ve started learning Japanese language and I’ve been enjoying it since then. So, every time that I have the opportunity to learn something new in the language, I do. This made my self-study more interesting and gripping! =) Hmm, talking about the video, Mr Takahashi introduces a new method to come up with original ideas with his game called Shiritori. This game consists in taking turns to say words that start with the last letter of the previous word. He gives many funny examples of how this method can help you. Of course that it is not going to help you all the time and maybe silly sometimes, although he says that after many attempts in a 'roulette game', one, at least, will be close enough to your aim. I found this game very interesting and I may try it. =) Writing: This week I kept the pace from the last one, especially in Quick Type. I could write 5 ones! And the average was from 320 to 360 words. I was analyzing my past Quick Write’s development and I have the tendency to run away from what is requested, so I waste time correcting and coming back to the main point. I should be aware of it; otherwise it will give me problems when the course starts. Okay, that’s all folks. See ya next week!

Hi, everyone!
Reading: I read three story, which are "Peter Pan" " The secret garden" " The adventure of Tom Sawyer ". I am reading "The adventure of Tom Sawyer " now. I thought the story of "The secret garden" is sad. Because the heroine, Mary was a bad girl, she was said by the Crawford family lived together that left this house and went to England. Mary's new family was Mr.Craven. There was a secret garden in Mr.Craven's house. The secret garden had not been entered anyone for about 10 years because Mr.Craven was very sad his wife's death. Mrs. Craven died in childbirth. Mr.Craven's son thought that Mr.Craven wanted his son to die. The secret garden contained the Craven family 's sad memory.
Vocabulary: I learned 30 words this week. It increases the words I don't know gradually. Listening: I listened to VOA learning English. I listened to about robots make some electric production, for instance iPhones and iPads. I was surprised at making some productions by robots. I think there are some good points to use robots. It can cut down the costs. Robots help human with dangerous situations. I think consumers think productions made by human are safer than by robots. Bur I don't care whether made by robots or human. Using robots have both good and bad.
Writing: I wrote 4 quick writes this week. It iYs difficult that describing things I want to write in English. I can't translate into English quickly. I wrote about 140 words on average.
