Hi,everyone, I'm Joy Vocabulary: In week 1 I used a book for studying of TOEFL. I tried learning about 125 words each day, but it was a bit difficult for me to remember all these words. That is why I decided to learn more little words each day in order to remember new words completely.
Reading: I read the book whose title is "The giving tree". The book is a story about a tree and a human. To begin with, the tree and the human(the boy) loved and neeeded each other. However, as the boy grew older, their distance became far. The tree always waited for the man and devoted himself to the man,but the man rarely came to see the tree. When I read this book, I felt the tree'S love to the human. The book made my heart very warm. I would like to live like this tree.
Listening: I watched some TED talk. Among them, most impressive talk is "Why we choose suicide". It was talked by Mark Henick. He talked about suicide and came to think why people choose suicide. This talk prevented people from suiiding with his encouragement. "We need you, we need you to be the leaders in this conversation." The phrase was very striking for me. I felt it seemed to say to me although I have never think of suicide. Through this talk, I was very encouraged. Also,I learned the importance of my life.
Writing: I did 1 quick type every day for this week. I could write more 150 letters only one time. It is difficult for me to write my opinion quickly with thinking about what I should write.

Dear Joy, Thank you for posting your weekly report. Vocabulary: Yes 125 words per day is a bit much. You need to be able to use these words. This is why we recommend learning 5 per day or 25 words per week. Learn the meaning, learn the spelling, practice using the words in different contexts, make sentences using the word. Try to find the word in your other English learning activities (reading and listening). Reading: The Giving Tree was one of my favorite books about unconditional love. Please read the following: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Giving_TreeListening: Why do you think people commit suicide? Greenland is ranked 1st in suicide rate, why? Nepal is ranked 110, why? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_suicide_rateWriting: Great job on your quick types. If you take the time to prepare and think about the question I'm sure you will get a higher word count next time. Good Luck! Great job making a great weekly report. Sincerely Miyagi H

Hi, everyone, I'm Joy. Vocabulary: I learned 50 new words per day in week 2. Last week, I tried learning about 125 new words in one day, but it was so difficult. Hence I reduced the number of new words. Still, it was a bit hard to put every new words in my brain, but I will continue to do this work. Next week, I will try to remember new words with speaking phrases which use new words.
Reading: I read the book "The Way of Youth" written by Ikeda Sensei. I think this book is for American young people. This book consiste of questions ond answers. Ikeda Sensei responds to some simple questions about such as work, friend, love, and so on. He encourages readers with his wonderful words. My favorite phrase is "winter always turn spring". When I listen and read this phrase, I always come to have powers for proceeding and tying to do my best for everythin which happen to me.
Listening: I listened some TED talks and watched a movie. I will introduce the movie. The movie's title is "27 dresses to be happy". It is about a woman who is wedding planner. She tries to do her best to make customers happy, but she can't make herself happy. She wes derived a man whom she has loved by her sister. Finally, she was able to catch her happiness. I sympathised and felt happy, too. I think this movie enable us to smile. This movie became one of my favorite movies.
Writing: I wrote 7 quick types in week 2. I could type over 150 letters in 6 types. I think I am gradually accustommed to write quick types. I would like to type words whithout looking at keyboard.

Dear Joy, Thank you for posting your weekly report.
Vocabulary: Great job learning 50 new words per day. In my experience students who learn in large quantity have difficulty retaining and applying the new information. I might suggest reducing the number of words you learn to five new words every day and practice usage and application of the new words. Once you get to FILA you need to be able to use these words automatically. I hope this helps.
Reading: Thank you for sharing a part of this book. "Winter always turns into Spring." Does that mean when you are having a bad day we should look forward to a brighter day because things always turn up? If you have finished this book please choose another book. If possible please choose a novel.
Listening: Which TED talks did you watch? What were the titles? What were they about. For the movie did you mean "27 Dresses?" You stated "She wes derived a man whom she has loved by her sister." What does this mean?
Writing: Good job with the quick types. Yes, you should not be looking at the keyboard when you type. Your typing speed should improve when you aren't looking at the keyboard.
Good job with your weekly report. Please share with us what you watched for your listening activity. Remember, when you enter FILA you need to be able to listen and understand native teachers. We want to know that you are doing the listening activity correctly.
Sincerely,
Miyagi H

Hi Joy!
This is Malcolm, one of the FILA English teachers.
Little by little! Do a little each day rather than too much at once. What words are you learning? Try using the new words that you learn each week when you write posts on this board or any time you speak or write in daily life. It may seem strange at first, but it does help you remember them. Maybe you have heard the phrase, "Use it or lose it." Using the words regularly with help you to remember them and keep them in your long-term memory. Then you can say with certainty that you have learned them. What was the most interesting word you studied this week?
I think that the advice and wisdom that Daisaku Ikeda is quite universal and is applicable to any young person anywhere in the world. Can you give an example of how you could precede due to "winter always turns to spring"?
"27 Dresses" is a very funny movie. I especially liked the very end. She was a wedding planner, what kind of job would you like to have in the future?
I'm glad to hear that you are typing. Typing is an important skill in this technologically advanced world. Are you counting letters or words? In English, the number of words is important. Keep up the good work!
Malcolm

Hi,everyone,I'm Joy. Vocabulary: I tried remembering 5 words per day. To reduce the number of words enables me to remember them firmly. I uwrote one word five times and consulted a dictionary in English and wrote a example sentence. Doing this, I think I could remember these words more greatly than before.
Reading: I chose a book whose title is "Tokyo Wonderland". It is written by Kay Hetherly. I'm sorry, this is a esssay not a novel. The witer is an American woman. She wites about daily life in Tokyo. She compares Japanese culture to American and other contry's culture. I discovered some differences between Japan and America. For example, in America, if one left his belonging such as a purse on the train or in the shop, it may not return to him. However, in Japan, mostly he can get it back. I was proud of Japanese spirit when I read this story. This book consists of simple stories,so it is useful to understand basic English. Listening: I listened fox news. Although I could listen the news, I could not understand the context well. It was too hard to understand all meanings. Also, I listened a story, " Christmas Carol" on youtube. In this story, three ghostsare involved. The first ghost represents tha past. The first ghost shows a man his hard memory. The second ghost represents the present. The seond ghost has him realize his bad behaviors. The third ghost represents the future. The third ghost shows a man sad sights. Lastly, a man comes to know that he may change suh a terrible future and in fact, he starts to change his mind. Then, he lives a better life. At first, I thought this was a dreadful story, but as I read I understood this was a happy story.
Writing: I wrote 7 quick type in this week. In a few of 7 quick writes, I could write over 170 letters. I was happy to be able to type quickly little by little. Next week, I hope that I can type 180 letters in all quick writes.
Response: Last week, I stated strange phrase, "She wes derived a man whom she has loved by her sister. It was so wrong. It meaned "her sister deprived her of a man whom she has loved.
Thank you!

Hi Joy! This is Malcolm, one of the FILA English teachers, Vocabulary: Yes, 5 words each day are appropriate for learning. Using an example sentence to help you remember how the word is useful as well. I would also like to challenge you to use the new words you are learning in your daily life when you speak or write. Making your own original sentences using the new words you are learning. Don't be afraid to use English with your friends. What were the most interesting words you learned this week? Reading: Sounds interesting. Books, essays, and blogs which compare cultures are quite interesting to read, but we must remember that the writers have only limited experiences in either culture. For example, I've been robbed twice in Japan and never in America. If I wrote about this, I would say that Japan is more dangerous than America. What cultural experiences have you experienced? Listening: News can be a little difficult to listen to. Are you listening to simplified news stories? Here are some sites with easier levels of stories: www.cnn.com/US/studentnews/quick.guide/archive/learningenglish.voanews.com/www.breakingnewsenglish.com/index.htmlThese have news stories that have different levels. You can find one that is good for you. Audiobooks, recorded books, are a great for listening. I love listening to books. If you were visited by the 3 ghosts, what would they show you? Writing: Are you counting letters or words? The previous question has 28 letters but only six words. Which are you counting? Consistent practice in writing will help you increase your typing speed. Good job! Keep it up! Malcolm

Hi, everyone, I"m Joy
Vocabulary: I increased the number of new words from 5 to 10 per day. I used an example sentence like last week. As I learn new words, the level of the words seems to be more difficult, but I really enjoy studying them. My favotire new word is "provision" because it has different meanings. I would like to be able to use not only one meaning but also other meanings.
Reading: I read a book "FROM THE ASHES A SPIRITUAL RESPONSE TO THE ATTACK ON AMERICA". This book is written about an affair that occured in September 11, 2001. A lot of men of religion such as Chrstians, Buddists, and Muslims comments about the affair. The affair is terrorism. I didn't know the affair before. However, after reading this book, I came to consider the cruel attack. Ikeda Sensei also comments in this book. He said, "we must strive to make a profoiund reverence for life the prevailing spirit of our times and our planet. I was impressed by phrase. I would like to study more about the terrible affair and teach about it to people in the future.
Listening: I listened a ted talk "Why I live in mortal dread of public speaking" by Mergan Washington. She has been a stutterer since ahe was a five years old. She have had difficulty in speaking in ftont of public. Often she is misunderstood that she is drunk or sha makes fun of a person who talks with her. However, she tried doing her best to convey her expressions. For example, she is not good at speaking the word "Wednesday", so she changes the word to "tomorrow" or "the day after Tuesday". Eventually, she realized the most useful way for her to convey her expressions is singing. She succeeds in music world. When I listened her song, I thought she is so cool and energetic. I love both sides of her character. They are charm. Although I am not a stutterer, I am also bad at speaking in front of many people. However, I can show my expressions which come from my heart by singing like her.
Writing: I wrote 7 Quick Write in this week. Last week, I hoped to write over 180 words in all Quick Write. I could not complete the gole, but I could write over 200 words in two Quick Type. Next week, I would like to write more quickly and enjoy writing.
Thank you!

Hi Joy, Great work learning 10 words every day. Yes, you will need to know how to use the words on the Academic Word List and General Service List in different ways. Be sure to learn the different forms of the word. Provision, Provisional, Provise.
Reading: Great job reading and sharing your reading. Sept 11th 2001 changed the world and how we see the world. I also recommend reading "Decision Points" by George W. Bush.
Listening: Thank you for sharing this inspiring "TED Talk." You will be doing role-plays and giving presentations in FILA so learning how to improve your public speaking skills is a plus.
Writing: Great job getting to 200 words. Please continue trying to improve your typing speed with quick types.
Sincerely,
Miyagi H
