Hi Selena!
This is Malcolm, one of the FILA English teachers>
Vocabulary: Good job with the vocabulary! Try using the new words that you learn each week when you write posts on this board or any time you speak or write in daily life. It may seem strange at first, but it does help you remember them. Maybe you have heard the phrase, "Use it or lose it." Using the words regularly with help you to remember them and keep them in your long-term memory. Then you can say, with certainty, that you have learned them. Good job this week. Keep it up! What is the most interesting word you studied this week?
Reading: "Cinderella" is a classic. She got what she achieved her desire by overcoming many obstacles. "Music" sounds interesting. Do you play any instruments?
Writing: Writing is a skill, which develops with consistent practice. Remember, Quick Writes are to develop speed and the ability to think and write quickly about a topic. Read the topic and then think about it for one minute, then write. All the topics are different. Some will be easier to write about than others, this is normal. Don't worry. You will get faster with practice. Strengthen your "writing muscles!" Of course, you can write using more academic topics if you like.
Listening: What makes you unique?
Keep up the good work!
Malcolm

Mmm...my loud singing voice makes myself unique.lol I like singing.

Hi,everyone. This is my fourth report. . Vocab: I learned 50 words this week. I learned "dine." "Dinner" comes from "dine"!! This is my finding.
Reading: I'm keeping reading "MUSIC." In this book, it is said that Pythagoras speculated that music is an audible version of the mathematical principles that build the entire universe. I don't understand this idea perfectly, but somehow I want to understand! So I'll search about it.
Listening: I listened TED talks entitled "Keep your goals to yourself" by Derek Sivers. In his speach, he said that telling my own goal others to isn't always good things. People tend to be satisfied when they tell their own goal to others so after telling it they're easy to feel challenging even though they don't do the best. I think so! I want to carry out my words.
Writing: I wrote what I want to change about myself. I wrote 217 words!! What I want to change are my weakness and my selfishness. When I do quick writes, I'm not thinking about structure of paragraph,so I'll be carefil about it from now on.
Thank you.

Hi Selena! Chelsey here. You asked about my memories when I was in Soka kindergarten. I remember having lots of other activities beside studying, it was so much fun! We used to have cooking classes, we sometimes get to play in the pool and the sand pit too and each class used to have their little garden where we have to plant and water our own vegetables. I really miss those times. You said you're not used to communicating in English, it's ok because we can learn and improve together English is not my first language too. Which percussion instrument do you play? Looking forward to meeting you too! Chelsey.

Hi Selena! Malcolm here.
Fifty words, great! Don't forget to try and use them in speaking or writing. Writing or speaking with original sentences will help to make the words permanent and automatic. Then you don't have to think about the words only use them.
Music is definitely mathematical! You are a percussionist, what do you think?
Goal setting is very important! Some say that you should tell others your goals so that you can't "cheat" and break your goal. It also allows others to support you fully. I believe that this is better for me. However, I can understand that there may be negative points as well. What is your method for setting goals?
Quick Writes are primarily for quantity of words. You don't need to worry about paragraph structure so much with this exercise. Do you best!
Keep up the good work!
Malcolm

Dear Selena, Thank you for posting your weekly report.
Vocabulary: Great job learning 50 new words. Please be sure to use these words so you don't lose them.
Reading: Music is a form of art and art is usually described qualitatively. If Pythagoras was able to quantify music and show its value through mathematical principles he would truly be considered a genius. Interesting book but what was the story?
Listening: Yes, well that's why its a good idea to keep a journal/diary. Keep your goals down on paper and know which goals to share with your family and friends.
Writing: Yes, you shouldn't be worried about the structure. We want you to focus on speed when you do your quick writes. 217 words is pretty good.
Great job Selena. Please keep up the good work. If you get a new please tell us the title. Thanks.
Sincerely,
Miyagi H

Hi,professor Malcolm.Thank you for your reply.
Yes, I'll use new words by writing sentences and speaking.
Relationship between music and math is difficult problem... Math has only a single answer, but music has no answer. So,finding common feature is difficult... ,but I'll keep thinking.
When I set my goal, I always make this goal a little difficult for me. To do it,I can improve myself.
I'll do the best for my English studying! Thank you.

Hi,everyone.This is my fifth report.
Vocab:I learned 35 new words.
Reading:I still continue to read the book "MUSIC." The part I read this week was written about notation. The notation is important for music in terms of conservation, communication, and conception. However,if there is only notation, it isn't music. Music depends upon player and listener. This book is a little difficult for me but I never give up! Next week I'll convey this content more easy to understand.
Listening:I watched TED talks entitled "the hidden power of smiling" by Ron Gutman. He searched graduation picture of many people and he found that who often smiles is likely to succeed. I think smiling creates peace.
Writing:I did 4 quick writes this week. I wrote about differnce between my high school and other high school.I think it's good teacher and beautiful school buliding. I wrote 140 words.Decreasing!! I'll increase the number of words...
Thank you.

Hi Selena.
Malcolm again. Looks like you had a productive week.
Vocabulary: Thirty-five new words, great!
It is very important to review the vocabulary you are learning. How many words have you learned so far? Can you remember them all? Keep using the words from past weeks as often as you can and in as many different situations as possible. Don't forget to study related words, or other meanings for the words. Using the words consistently will help you remember them, so they will become automatic and you won't have to think about them when you are using them. This is the final goal.
Reading: I agree that the music is only part of the equations for music. As a percussionist, how do you affect the music you play?
Listening: Smiling is an indicator of happiness or contentment, and those who are happy or satisfied do tend to succeed. How does smiling create peace?
Writing: Good job with your Quick Writes. Keep it up. Writing is a skill. You can only get better with practice. Little by little you will write more. I'm sure that you will consistently increase your numbers if you write consistently. Writing is a skill! You must train your "writing muscles" to make them strong.
Keep up the good work.
Malcolm

Hi,everyone.This is my sixth report.
Vocab:I'm sorry butI learned only 10 words... I'll try to find oppotunity to use words that I had learned.
Reading:I'm keeping reading "MUSIC." What I read this week is written about notation as well as last week. In this book, it is said that notaion is not all and true music is hidden in between note and note. So,if several people play the same score, each music differs a little.
Writing:I'm sorry but I couldn't do quick writes.I'll do next week.
Listening:I watched the TED talks entitled "Remember to say thank you" by Laura Trice. She talked about importance of saying "thank you." I think appriciating is difficult. So,people who can appricciate are nice.
Thank you.

Dear Pro.Malcolm
Hi,thank you for your response and I'm sorry for replying late.
I have learned so many many words... So,I maybe forgot some words.I'll try to use them, but I don't have oppotunity to speak English with others:[ So I challenge to use the words when I write English sentense.
When I play the percussion,I try to put my emotion into the music, and atract audience by motion that I strike the instrument.
Smiling brings mild feeling to others. For example,in lazy morning,if someone say 'good morning' with smilimg face,I'll be bright feeling.
Thank you.

Hi Selena. It sounds like you are either busy or tired or both. Please rest and relax a little everyday. They are important for your mental and physical health. Sleep at least 6 to 8 hours each day as well. Vocabulary: Don't worry if you had only a few words this week, next week you can do more. The important thing is that you continue to learn some words each week. Practice using them in many different ways. You have to make your opportunities for both writing and speaking. You can speak English with your friends. (Most of the opportunities you will have to speak English in the future will not be with native-English speakers.) Practice with your friends at school. In FILA, you will be using English to communicate with everyone, including Japanese students. When practicing vocabulary, if someone doesn't understand the meaning of a word, you can explain it in easy English. This is also an important skill to master. What was the most interesting word you studied this week? Reading: "Music" sound very interesting but very technical. You can try reading a book that is easier and fun too. What other kinds of books do you like to read? By the way, I was a percussionist in marching band and wind orchestra in junior/senior high school. I as a bass drummer in marching band and general percussionist in the orchestra. Listening: Saying thank you is very important. I think it is very important to use it with sincerity. So often it seems that it is said without true meaning. Do you always say thank you with sincere meaning? Writing: Please try to do at least 3 or 4 Quick Writes each week. Consistency is very important. Keep up the good work. Breathe deeply and come back next week with new energy and conviction. Malcolm

Hi Malcolm, Selena,
I am Rita from India. I was recently introduced to a new application called Elevate. I use it on my iPhone. I don't know if it is available on Android phone. It is also an app to improve English further. It helps you learn new words, writing etc. I thought it would be of help.
I am also continuing to read my books and posting about it on my weekly reports.
Thanks
