Listening: In Feb.27, I take TOEIC test, so I'm studying for it. I think many business words are used in TOEIC listening. I'm not familiar with business words so much, but I have to learn them.
Writing: I started keep a diary in English. It is so difficult. I'll challenge to keep it as long as possible. Incidentally,I thought what I learned from baseball experiences. We need to buy some goods such as a glove, a bat, balls. My parents spent much money on my baseball activities. I learned the importance of appreciating parents.

Hi Shawn, Thank you for posting your weekly report.
Vocabulary: Yes, please try to learn phrases as well as individual vocabulary words.
Reading: What was the title of this book? Did you find a new book?
Listening: You're going to take the TOEIC test on Feb. 27th? The words on the General Service List should help. Learn vocabulary and practice listening to the vocabulary. Did you do any practice listening activities in order to prepare for the TOEIC? What was the listening program about? Please give details.
Writing: Did you do any quick types? How many words did you write/type in 10 minutes? Is baseball the only activity that helped you to learn to appreciate your parents? Did you learn anything directly from baseball? If you are writing in your diary in English please share some of your thoughts on this message board. You need to practice using English and this message board is a good opportunity for you to practice writing/typing.
Good job on your report but I would apprecate more information on how you are improving your English language skills. Please give more details on what you are doing. What programs you are listening to? What you are writing about? I can't tell if you are studying if you only state "I'm studying." You need to give details.
Sincerely,
Miyagi H

Hi Shawn, Thank you for posting your weekly report.
Vocabulary: Great! Did you use these words in your quick writes? Are you using them every day? Did you use these words in your weekly report? When you enter FILA these words need to be automatic.
Reading: Yes! This book is a classic. If you read the first 20 pages please describe and summarize what your read. This is your chance to use the vocabulary words you learned. Please do not leave this part of your weekly report empty. Please give details about what you read and your impressions about the book.
Listening: Wow! 5 TED talks. Did you understand what you listened to? If not please go back and listen to it again. What was the title of the TED talk? Yes, we want you to read more books. Reading can help you expand your mind. What have you learned so far about Charlie Gordon? Do you understand the setting of the story? What does a janitor do?
Writing: Great job doing 5 quick writes. Good job getting 130 words. If you know what you are going to write you may write faster.
Please remember that when you enter FILA you will be expected to be able use the words in the general service list. I don't know if you read my post last week but you need to give more detail in your report. Please read your classmates posts and see if you can do the same.
Sincerely,
Miyagi H

Hello!I had the examination, so I didn't study so much. I'm thinking of writing as more details as possible.
Vocabulary: I just reviewed the words I have learned so far.
Reading: I cannot read any books this week. I haven't read the book,"Flowers for Algernon", so I'll read it next week.
Listening: I watched TED talk entitled "The beauty and diversity of Muslim life" by Bassam Tariq. He is a blogger, filmmaker, and a butcher. In each field, he does great works as a Muslim. As a blogger, he visited a different mosque in a different American state each night of Ramadan and shared the stories of this experiences on a blog. He called this project "30 Mosques in 30 Days". As a filmmaker, he made a film, "These Birds Walk". He described street children who are struggling to find some semblance of family in Muslim regions. The film emphasizes reducing these children. Finally, as a butcher, he is selling "halal". Halal is meat Muslims are allowed to eat. Since Muslims in the US has difficulty getting halal meat, he sells it for these people. We should appreciate these great contribution of Muslims and think better of prejudice that Muslims are dangerous.
Writing: I did 1 Quick Writing. I wrote the goals for the FILA. My goals for FILA is speaking fluently!! I think it is important to speak positively, but I'm not so good at talking with an other person even in Japanese.I often consider what I'm about to speak deeply and I can't speak quickly. If speaking is not fun for me, the FILA life will be just a pain. I'll try to speak actively both in English and Japanese. I wrote 130 words in this theme.

Hi Shawn!
This is Malcolm, one of the FILA English teachers.
Yes, we understand that you are still taking exams and other high school related activities. If you didn't have much time this week, then do what you can and do more the next week. We don't want English to be a burden or a frustration for you. We just want to help prepare you as much as possible for your entrance into FILA. Take a deep breath and relax.
Vocabulary: It is very important to review the vocabulary you are learning. Keep using them as often as you can and in as many different situations as possible. Don't forget to study related words, or other meanings for the words. Try using the new words that you learn each week when you write posts on this board or any time you speak or write in daily life. It may seem strange at first, but it does help you remember them. Maybe you have heard the phrase, "Use it or lose it." Using the words regularly with help you to remember them and keep them in your long-term memory. Then you can say with certainty that you have learned them.
Using the words consistently will help you remember them, so they will become automatic and you won't have to think about them when you are using them. What was the most interesting word that you studied?
Reading: I hope that you will have time to read "Flowers for Algernon" this week. It is a great book. Did you see the Japanese drama based on this story starring Yusuke Santamaria? Where are you in the story now? You said you read the first 20 pages last week.
Listening: Sounds like and interesting TEDTalk. What you think are the typical Japanese feelings and reactions to Muslims?
Writing: Try to do more this week. Consistency is important. Practice makes permanent! The more you practice and better you will get at speaking and writing.
Keep up the good work!
Malcolm

Hello! Nice to meet you, Malcolm.
Yes, I try to use the words I learned. The word impressive for me is "abortion". I think this word is often used because it is in the list. Considered from this fact, abortion seems to be seen as one of the serious social problem. I think it is a life even if it is not born outside.
"Flowers for Algernon" is written as reports. The main person, Charlie has a disability of intelligence, so he was made a subject of intelligence experiments. He is made to write reports for examining his intelligence. In fact, first 20 pages, there are many mistakes in his report. And I found Algernon is mouse's name. It used for experiment.
I think many Japanese people see Muslims as dangerous people such as terrorists. These Japanese idea is caused by media. If an incident regarding Muslims such as recent ISIL news happen, media report biased facts. Japanese people are influenced by these report.

Weekly Report
Vocabulary: I learned 20 words this week.
Reading: I still reading "Flowers for Algernon". I haven't finished 1/4 of all yet. I want to read books more quickly. The main person, Charlie is made to do many things for experiment. In the part I read this week, He was given a TV for leaning languages by Dr Strauss, the professor who takes the experiment. Charlie was told that he need to watch it before sleeping", but he said, "It's so noisy that I cannot sleep comfortably". I think these experiments are very stressful because Charlie didn't want to do. In addition, Charlie was made fun of by his colleagues, but he didn't notice it. I think it's terrible discrimination even if he doesn't feel bad. My parents are special-needs school teachers and I also want to be a person who can help disabled people and take their side.
Listening: I watched 3 TED Talks. "Happy Maps" by Daniele Quercia is interesting. He had been gone to his workplace in his bicycle by the road that the map application tell him on the phone for a month. There was heavy traffic everyday. One day, he use another road toward his workplace. It was beautiful because many trees and leaves are there. He hadn't been aware of it. That is, there are many ways toward the destination and the shortest way is not always the best way. I'll choose ways from various views like this speaker.
writing: I did 4 Quick Writes this week. I can write about 130 words on average. I'm trying to think about what I'm about to write. I want to be able to write 200 words/10 minutes on average before entering the FILA.
