Hi, everyone!
Vocabulary: I learned only10 words this week because I studied for Eiken. I will learn more new words next week.
Reading: I read the book "Because of Winn-Dixie". My friend recommended me this book, so I started reading this book. This is a story of a girl called Opal and a dog Winn-Dixie. Opal is lonely girl because his mother left home. One day, she found a dirty dog. The dog were ugly and lonely. She was lonely, too. So she named the dog Winn-Dixie and lived together.
Listening: I listened to 2 titles from TED talks. But I'm not good at listening, I can't understand in detail. I want to grow up my listening skill. It is my challenge.
Writing: I did 4 quick writes this week. I wrote about 60 words on average. I will try to write 100 words next week.

Hi Malia!
This is Malcolm, one of the FILA English teachers.
Good job, 35 new words! Try using the new words that you learn each week when you write posts on this board or any time you speak or write in daily life. It may seem strange at first, but it does help you remember them. Maybe you have heard the phrase, "Use it or lose it." Using the words regularly with help you to remember them and keep them in your long-term memory. Then you can say with certainty that you have learned them.
"Because of Winn-Dixie" is a fun book. Would you take in a dog like Winn-Dixie? What do you think is the meaning of the candy, Littmus Lozenges?
Friendship is very important. I'm sure you will make many new friends at university both here and abroad. What qualities do you look for in a friend?
Education reform is a necessary part of making sure education is progressing along with society. What reforms would you suggest for the Japanese education system?
Good job with the Quick Writes. I'm sure that you will consistently increase your numbers if you write consistently. Writing is a skill! You must train your "writing muscles" to make them strong.
Keep it up!
Malcolm

Hi, everyone. I had a final exam this week. So I couldn't English self study so much. I write about my self study this week as much as possible.
Vocabulary: I'm sorry I didn't learn new words. I will learn and use many words next week because I didn't do this week.
Reading: I didn't read "The little price". Now I am going to write about a fact that was written in text book. The fact is that hunger in developing country are not caused by food shortage but a lack of income. I thought the cause of hunger was no food. According to the text book, if it were shared evenly, everyone would have enough to eat. But sometimes food is destroyed. I was surprised this fact.
Listening: I listen to any problems. I will listen to problems everyday next week.
Writing: I did 1 quick write this week. I wrote about my change from my junior high school days. I think my change from my junior high school days is to broaden my view. I became to notice other people's efforts. I wrote 140 words. I will write 150 words next week.

Hi Malia.
Malcolm here.
Yes, we understand that you are still taking exams and other high school related activities. If you didn't have much time this week, then do what you can and do more the next week. We don't want English to be a burden or a frustration for you. We just want to help prepare you as much as possible for your entrance into FILA. Take a deep breath and relax.
Vocabulary: It is very important to review the vocabulary you are learning too. Keep using them as often as you can and in as many different situations as possible. Don't forget to study related words, or other meanings for the words. Try using the new words that you learn each week.
Reading: There are many contributing factors to the hunger problem: poverty, climate change, lack of infrastructure, corrupt governments, internal and external politics, and others. There is no easy answer to any problem. What can you do here in Japan to help solve the hunger problem?
Listening: Please listen a short time each day. You can do it.
Writing: You can do it. Little by little!

Hi, everyone
Vocabulary: I learned 26 words. I was taught how to learn vocabulary and make vocabulary cards by my teacher. I try to study vocabulary in this way, and I want to increase my vocabulary over the time.
Reading: I read "The little prince". The prince traveled planets where he didn't live, and met various parsons. The prince's words include purity. I can't express my feeling while I was reading. I have a question. Which is better, reading lots of easy books or difficult book cost times?
Listening: I listen to TED talks and VOA learning English. According to one of these I listened to, dogs can recognize whether you are happy or angry on your face. Dog is very smart animal. I have never pet dogs. If I had a dog, dog would relax me.
Writing: I can't achieve my goal 150 words. I wrote 144 words. It is my best this week. I will achieve writing my goal writing 150 words next week.

Hi Malia, Thank you for posting your weekly report. Vocabulary: Please share with everyone on the board your secret to learning vocabulary words.
Reading: I think the answer to your question is both. Since you need to practice both reading speed and reading comprehension I would read as much as I can both easy and difficult books. If the book is too difficult where you don't understand anything it says than I believe you need to get an easier book. If you have a smart phone you can download the kindle app and get free e-books. More importantly we want you to practice understanding the story and sharing the story with other people using this message board. As you make your weekly reports please try to explain in your own words the stories you read.
Listening: Do you want a pet dog? What kind of dog do you want? Do you think you can learn this skill of recognizing how a person feels by looking at their face?
Writing: 144 words is good. You're doing well. Work on improving your typing speed little by little.
Great job Malia. Please actively use the vocabulary words you learn every day.
Sincerely,
Miyagi H

I share the way of studying vocabulary my teacher taught me.
I separate vocabulary cards into three groups. I make vocabulary cards I don't remember words. This group called group A. Next day, I check the words in group A. The words I have remembered is move to group B. The words in group B is checked once a week. Vocabulary cards I make everyday is in group A, and checked everyday. If I have remembered the words in group B, I move to group C. The words in group C is checked once a month.
Do you understand the way of studying vocabulary? I'm so sorry I can't explain the way of studying vocabulary well.
