Hello! My name is Hailey! I live in Osaka. I belonged to the art club. I draw oil paintings, traditional Japanese paintings and illustration. I like art! I especially like "The Ninth Wave" drawn by Ivan Aivazovsky. When I was a child, I looked at it. It was a powerful painting. I think that art is one of the languages. Arts say history, cultures, and so on. I also like historical things. I want to work for children all over the word. So at the Soka university I will study world history and think what I can do to make the world peaceful now. Nice to meet you!

Hi Hailey, Welcome to the FILA message board. Good job making your first post! That's an amazing painting by Ivan Aivazovsky. If you get a chance to go to the Smithsonian or the British Museum there are some great paintings there. What part of the world and its history interests you? Please read your classmates posts and comment on them. Thanks. Sincerely, Miyagi H

Hi Everyone, Vocabulary : I will take a examination English Proficiency Examination on next Sunday, so I study only a word book for it. I haven't studied GSL this week. Sorry. I feel my vocabulary is much much less. It difficult for me to distinct similar words.
Reading: I'm reading "New Yorkers" which has some short stories. In the book, I like story "The Christmas Present" because it is very romantic. The poor woman converts her beautiful hair into cash, and buys the chain for the watch for her husband. But he converts his watch into cash, and buys the combs for his girl friend. They love and value each other! I've heard this story before in Japanese, so this story was easy to understand. Other stories were interesting, but I couldn't understand any sentences. I need read more English books.
Listening: Sorry, I've not listened to news this week. But I listened to English with English Proficiency Examination's questions from the past.
Writing: I did 2 quick writes this week. At first I wrote 112 words about my free time. I draw pictures and I read a comic in my free time. Second I wrote 110 words about the best thing about high school life. I think it is to be able to make reliable friendships. I've not had much time to write long sentences in English. I don't get used to write English well. Next week I try to write more than 150 words in 10 minutes.
Thank you.

Listening: Listening practice for the exam is better than no listening practice.
Writing: Yes, I hope you get 150 words next week. Make sure you take the time to think about the question.
Great job! Please keep up the good work.
Sincerely,
Miyagi H

I'm sorry to be late for sending my weekly report. Vocabulary : I studied 15 words this week. I noticed I've learned some words with wrong meanings. I have to study more words perfectly.
Reading: I finished reading "New Yorkers." I searched summaries in laps near of this story after reading it. I often couldn't interpret some stories correctly. I thought I must become composed when I read English. I'm Reading "Helen Keller." I have read a comic about her life. So I can understand well. I respect Hellen! She don't resign herself, and study hard. I don't know I would make efforts If I were hard of hearing and blind. I respect Ms Sullivan, too. Her efforts made Hellen know the world. I am impressed this story!
Listening: Nowadays I study about human rights, and I watched a moving image "First taste of chocolate Ivory Coast." In Ivory Coast a lot of adults and children work in cacao farms without know what cocoas are made for. In this moving image some laborers eat chocolates. And they are enjoy the taste. I like chocolates, but I've never thought who cacaos are harvested. I want more Ivorians know the taste of chocolates.
Writing: I did 2 quick writes this week. I wrote 120 words about a hanami experience. And I wrote 113words about Christmas and Christmas Eve. I remembered days I believed in Santa Claus. I couldn't attach 150 words. Next week I will write135 words.
Thank you.

Hi Hailey, Good job posting your weekly report.
Vocabulary: Yes, please try to make sure you know how to use the word correctly. Just learning the dictionary meaning won't help you when you need to use it.
Reading: The Helen Keller story is a great story. First Anne Sullivan had enough courage to stand her ground and Helen was humble enough to start learning. Teachers can't teach students until students decide they want to listen and learn.
Listening: Many students study or do homework without knowing why they are studying. We as teachers hope you learn and taste the joys of learning just as the people in the Ivory Coast should taste chocolate.
Writing: 113 words is good. Let's try to get more next time.
Great work on your weekly report. Please keep up the good work.
Sincerely,
Miyagi H

Hello everyone! Vocabulary : I studied 26 words this week. A word have a lot of meanings. I don't remember all of them. I must learn more words.
Reading: I'm reading "Hellen Keller this week. I respect Ms. Sullivan more. And I thought it very difficult to improve Helen 's wild table manners become good. She was like a wildlife. I want to try to finish reading this book in next week.
Listening: I watched 3 moving images of TED. I watched one three times. First of all I watch it without captions. And I watched it with English credits. Finally I had read a transcription and watched it. I heard this way in school. I will try to watch TED on this way. I especially impressed with "How to save the world (or at least yourself) from bad meetings." I'll be a leader of one meeting in school tomorrow. I will remind it and do my best tomorrow.
Writing: I did 3 quick writes this week. I wrote 165 words about my experience studying for the university entrance examinations. And I wrote 174 words about a topical English class in my high school. The third quick writes, I wrote 142 words about my elementary school life. I attached the aim I decided last week. Next week I will write 200 words.
Thank you.

Hi Hailey, Thank you for posting your weekly report. Vocabulary: Instead of learning more words I think you need to practice using the words and learn the different meanings of each word and how they are used in different ways. Are you making vocabulary cards? Are you making sentences? What are you doing to learn the different meanings? Reading: Yes, but we were all like Helen when we were babies. Why don't you ask your mother what she would do? I bet she knows. Helen was just a late bloomer. If you hear her speak you can see that she is intelligent and needed the right person to guide her in the right direction. Anne was the right person. We are all like Helen in that respect. What was the one thing she regrets? Please watch the video below (Helen and Anne) www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ch_H8pt9M8Listening: Good luck with your meeting I hope you use your time efficiently. David Grady's speech was interesting and entertaining. Did you get the jokes? What is Mindless Accept Syndrome? What causes MAS? When you get to FILA I hope you can stay away from MAS. Writing: Wow! great job. You got to 174 words. That's Excellent. Great job Hailey! Please take time to go through your classmates posts and see what other students are doing. Sincerely, Miyagi H

Hi Hailey! I'm Haley... We have the same name! I've been to Osaka a few times. It's so beautiful and everyone there was so friendly!
Unlike you, all through high school, I've struggled with art. Art is so subjective, meaning that everyone has a different opinion or interpretation of art. There's no 'correct' interpretation or 'correct' type of art, so I've struggled with understanding and interpreting art. But like you, I absolutely LOVE history. I studied ancient history when I was in high school, and I loved learning about Ancient China and Japan, as well as learning about Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. I'm looking forward to meeting you in April!

Hello, everyone. I had heavy stomachache this week, and will take term examinations next week, so I couldn't study of FILA. I'm sorry.
Vocabulary: When I make vocabulary cards, I write meanings I didn't know. I try to use the words I learned. This week I study words for term examinations.
Reading: I continue to read "Helen Keller" this week. I remembered I've heard my wrong behaving when I was a child. I ran in an acquaintance's house. My mother thought "Hailey is too little to understand manners," so she didn't scold me. Later my mother find she must scold a child behaving bad to bring up a child well. I notice every children are taught many things from parents and teachers, and so on. I watched the video about Helen and Ann. Helen's voice is not natural. But I like her voice because this voice is made from a lot of efforts, I feel.
Listening: I watch only one video of Helen Keller, sorry. I had good meeting last week, but I feel I have little leadership. MAS is a disease we don't think a purpose of things and act without thinking better. This is bad. Action without purpose can't reach an end. We have the right of knowing purpose! It was difficult for me to get the jokes on TED. This reason is not only language, but also difference between cultures.
Writing: I wrote only one quick write. I wrote 196 words. I wrote about my way dealing with stress.
Next week I won't be able to study to FILA because of examinations. But I will make efforts very much!

Hi, Haley! What same names we have!!!
I read your post in your thread. You live in Australia! When I hear about Australia, I remember Vegemite! I ate it when I was in junior high school. Its taste was mysterious! But I want to try it one more!
I think art has a lot of way to represent something, and there are no correct thing, too! Art is too free! So I often struggle with drawing pictures. I want to draw a picture I want to draw. But it is difficult tend to my tension and lack of my skill. My teacher said me "When we draw a picture, we shave our own soul." I don't see all of its meanings, but I love art. So I want to shave my soul!!! I am happy because you like Japanese history! I especially like Heian era! I like Japanese Waka! Waka was made of letter Kana and Kanji. They are made of Chinese. So I like Chinese culture, too! Many culture are connecting! It's interesting!
I would like to talk with you more!!!!!

Hi Hailey, Thank you for posting your weekly report. I'm sorry to hear about your stomachache. I hope you feel better soon.
Vocabulary: Which words will be on your final exam?
Reading: I'm happy to hear you had a chance to watch Helen speak. She started out saying one word "water" but then progressed to become a highly intelligent woman. Helen is a great example of hard work and learning.
Listening:I have difficulty with jokes sometimes too. Yes, getting to understand the speakers culture and point of view can help us understand jokes.
Writing: How do you deal with stress? Do you run away from stress or welcome it as a challenge?
Great job Hailey. Good luck on your final exams.
Sincerely,
Miyagi H

Hello, everyone! Now I'm fine, thank you! I have taken final exams from Tuesday to today. So I couldn't study English much, sorry.
Vocabulary: I had learned TOEIC words for the English exam this week. And I learned 6 words on Vocabulary General Service List.
Reading: I continue to read “Helen Keller.” I like scene Ms. Sullivan taught love to Helen. She compared love to clouds. It can't be touched, but we feel it. This expression is very beautiful and easy to understand.
Listening: I watched “the mathematics of love” by Hannah Fry. She talked about how to win at online dating. I was surprised with the fact it turns out that on an online dating website, how attractive you are does not dictate how popular you are, and actually, having people think that you're ugly can work to your advantage. A beautiful woman is too popular to go steady with. And a destined soul mate will love not only me but also my weak point, so we should show our own.
Writing: I deal with stress by think it is challenge. If it is very difficulty, I talk with my friend and family and so on. I wrote one Quick Write. I wrote about my goals for the Faculty of Liberal Arts Program at Soka university. I want to be an able person who can help children to live with feeling secure. I'll find the way of it. Until entrance, I think about my goal more deeply.
Thank you!

Hi Hailey!
This is Malcolm, one of the FILA English teachers.
We realize that you have a busy life with school and other responsibilities. We are only asking you to be as consistent as possible in your pre-study for FILA. We don't want English to be a burden or a frustration for you. We just want to help prepare you as much as possible for your entrance into FILA. Take a deep breath and relax. Little by little!
Vocabulary:
Any words you learn are good words. The lists we provided are the most common English words, but there are many words that will be useful that you can find as you read or listen in these exercises.
It is very important to review the vocabulary you are learning. Keep using them as often as you can and in as many different situations as possible. Don't forget to study related words, or other meanings for the words.
Using the words consistently will help you remember them, so they will become automatic and you won't have to think about them when you are using them. Making original sentences will help you to use and remember the words better. What was the most interesting word that you have studied so far?
Reading: The story of Helen Keller is a beautiful story of a teacher and a student. It is very inspirational. Emotions are very difficult to describe. How would you describe beauty to someone who is blind?
Listening: Please don't copy and paste from the subtitles and transcript and edit it. Please write in your own words.
What would you use to promote yourself in this situation?
Writing: How many did you do and what were your word counts?
I like your goal. What steps do you need to reach to meet your goal?
Keep up the good work!
Malcolm

I'm sorry to be late for sending my weekly report. And thank you concern. Recently I join a committee and act for our graduation. I'm busy, but I make efforts to my pre-study as well as possible!
Vocabulary: This week I learned 20 words. I made sentences using words I learned. And I study words when I think "How do I say the Japanese word I use now in English?" The interesting word i learned is "ground" because it has a lot of meanings. I didn't know it means a first coat of paint. "Ground" is generally used as a land, so I feel a first coat looks like ground. Many meanings of a word have similar meanings, but sometimes have different meanings. I wonder that "book" has a meaning "reservation."
Reading: I continue to read "Helen Keller." She had talked with a word card, Helen tried to talk with her mouth. She continued to grow. She studied positively. I want to be a person like her. When I describe beauty to someone who is blind, I say beauty wraps us strongly and kindly and comfort us.
Listening: I'm sorry that I copied a translation on website. I'll try to write my original sentence! I watched 2 video on TED. The one is "Grow your own clothes" by Suzanne Lee. She wears a vest made from microbes, tea and sugars. It is a prototype. I couldn't believe it was made from tea and sugars. Now it absorbs water, but this technology will be used to not only fashion but also furniture in the future. We may be able to save the shortage of resources in the worlds. Fashion is coming and going, so I think it becomes popular someday. And I watched "For these woman, reading is a daring act." By Laura Boushnak. She acts to make the world women can take educations. She found Arabian women have theirs own experience they can't take education, so their talk can affect others materially. Study is a tool to make our own decisions. They feel how important education is. But a lot of Japanese don't think why we have to study. We must find it and study positively.
Writing: I'm sorry, I lost my quick write I wrote last week. I don't remember how many words I wrote. To I reach to meet my goal, I know the country situation. I think Education is one of the most important things for children. If we prepare education, we consider how education is needed there and financial matters and so on. I wrote one weekly report. I wrote 138 words about "Write about a place you have visited." I wrote about Chiba my paternal family live in. I've been to Chiba a few times. But I don't remember because I was a little child. My cousin in Chiba was a Soka university student. I want to go to Chiba and talk to my cousin. And I wrote about a place my maternal grandmother brought me and my sister. There is a gully in which clear water is streaming. I recapture that we played in it. I want to go there again.
Thank you.
