Hi Ruth, Congratulations and welcome to the FILA message board! I'm from Chiba too. I was born in Ichikawa. Have you learned any of the lyrics of ONE DIRECTION? Which song is your favorite? You mentioned you want to bring education to less developed countries. Does that mean you want to become a teacher? Or does it mean you want to work with an NGO or volunteer group like JICA? Please let us know.

My friends live in Ichikawa ,so I often go there!! When I listen to One Direction, I always watch the lyrics of their songs and learn to understand what they said. My favorite song is "Diana" It's a not very famous song, but I like it becaus it makes me relax. At the moment, I don't know enough about what I want to do in the future. However I'm interested in JICA. I would like to know about JICA in detail. Through studying issues on an International level , I want to find what I should do in the future!!

Hi everyone Vocabulary I learned 40 new words this week. Learning vocabulary is fun!!
Reading The book I'm reading is called "DRIPPY" by SIDNEY SHELDON & MARY SHELDON. The hero of the story is DORIPPY. He was a raindrop. The story is breathtaking adventure of DORIPPY. However It is really interesting. I can't put it down.
Listening I watched a TED TALK entitled " How not to be ignorant about the world. In the speech, he said that " The first thing to think about the future is to know about present " I also sympathized and agreed with his words.
Writing I did 5 quick writes this week 1 every day. At first, I couldn't write a lot of words and I couldn't find the words that I wanted to express. By the end of the week I got better at than I was before.

Hi everyone.
Vocabulary I learned 35 new words. I need to study for my vocabulary even more because I would like to take a TOEIC test at an early date. So I will work harder at studying!!
Reading I have finished reading the book. At first DRIPPY was ignorant and he often said a rude things. In the course of his journey, he have many precious experiences. Eventually he found things he should do and he has become a person of consequence because of people he met in his journey!! This book is fascinating!!
Listening I watched TED Talks "Standford Commencement "by Steve Jobs. He told us three stories. He said " No big deal. Just three stories." However I didn't think so. I admire his courage and wisdom. I would like to be a person who always maintain a positive attitude like him!!
Writing I did 7 quick writes this week 1 every day. I always felt that I should practice a lot to improve my writing skill...

Vocabulary: I learned about 50 new words. Reading: Eventually " Steave Jobs"reached me yesterday, however, ironically the book I bought was Japanese edition. I had ordered wrong book!! I was shocked and I have ordered English edition of "Steave Jobs ". Now, my mother is reading that book I'm still reading " There's a boy in the girl's bathroom ". Bradley Chalkers was always lonely. No one sat at the desk next to him. He didn't have a friend because he is a perverse character and an odd boy. One day, Jeff Fishkin moved from Washington,D.C., and he sat down next to Bradley. After school, Jeff said to Bradley "I don't mind sitting next to you. Really " and they became to be friends!! Listening: I watched Ted talks entitled "For more tolerance, we need more.....tourism?"by Aziz Abu Sarah. He decided to dedicate his life to bringing down the walls that separate people. I respect his activities to connect with people and agree with his way of thinking that tourism can change things and bring down the walls. Writing: I did 7 quick writes this week 1 every day. I could write just 120 words. I would like to write more than 120 by next week.

Vocabulary : I learned 50 new words.
Reading: Finally, The book I ordered reached me last Thursday. I was amazed to see that English book is so different from Japanese book. English book is so thick!!! How many hours is necessary for me to finish reading that book...? Anyway I'll try !!
Listening: I watched Ted talks entitled "making peace is a marathon " by May El Kahalil. She come from Lebanon, and she believe that running can change the world. She used to be a marathon runner. One morning, and while training, she was hit by a bus. Because of the accident, she was no longer the same runner I used to be,so she decided," if I couldn't run myself,I wanted to make sure that others could". If I were her, I probably would not have been able to decide such a thing . I believe she is the owner of strong spirit. She thought by organizing such a marathon I'll be able to pay back to my community, build bridges with the outside world. I think her way of thinking is right and makes a lot of people happy.
Writing: I did 5 quick writes this week 1 every day. I could write about 125 words.

Hi Ruth, Thank you for posting your weekly report.
Vocabulary: 50 words is a lot. Are you sure you're retaining all 50 words. You may want to reduce the number and increase usage of the words. Are you using each of these words every day?
Reading: Great! I might suggest reading the Japanese and English at the same time. It may increase your comprehension.
Listening: We hope in the FILA program you will gain the confidence you need to become a global leader like May and lead people in a positive direction.
Writing: Good job! Did you mean "I wrote 125 words in 10 minutes."
Keep up the good work.
Sincerely,
Miyagi H

Vocabulary I learned new 30 words. I was very busy this week. I like memorizing a lot of words, but I'm worse at remembering English than I thought. So I want to review what I have learned so far....
Reading It was difficult for me to read "Steve Jobs "by Walter Isaacson. By reading this book,I'm sure that I can increase my vocabulary and improve my English skills. So I'll try to finish reading this book. I was too busy to read only 5pages. "How this book came to be" is written at the beginning of this book. Jobs asked this book 's author, Walter Isaacson to write a biography of him. However Isaacson shook his head because he assumed that jobs was still in the middle of an oscillating career that had many more ups and downs left. I'm interested in the rest of that story!!
Listening I watched Ted talks entitled " The courage to tell a hidden story "by Eman Mohammed. She talked about "Discrimination against women ". She is the first female photojournalist in the Gaza Strip,Palestine. Her work was considered a serious insult to local traditions and created a lasting stigma for her and her family. The perception of woman's life in Giza is passive, but she claimed that she never give up to live as a Palestinian female photographer. I respect a person who has a very strong mind. She possesses a great heart for overcoming any obstacle. I want to be a woman like her.
Writing I did 3 quick writes this week. I could write 200 words in the topic.

Hi Ruth, Thank you for posting your weekly report.
Vocabulary: Yes, please review daily and use them. Using the vocabulary is the best way to remember them. Reading: Yes, there are some terms which may be difficult to understand in the book Steve Jobs. It might be helpful to understand the book if you new the history of Apple computers. How much do you know about the history of Apple computers? Have you read the part about Steve Wozniak?
Listening: Fantastic! I lived in Gaza and I remember life was very difficult there. I'm sure she was accused of being a spy or traitor. Did she explain why she decided to become a photo-journalist? Which characteristics do you admire about her?
Writing: Great job getting to 200 words. Let's try to get 5 quick writes done next week. OK.
Great work Ruth. Please take the time to look at your classmates posts and comment on them.
Sincerely,
Miyagi H

Vocabulary: I learned 25 new words from DUO. DUO is one of my favorite books to study English.
Reading: I'm reading Steve Jobs. When I'm reading this book, I felt that there is something about him that makes him different from other men. He have things that we don't have. I'm interested in his way of thinking. I only know a little bit about Apple company. However I feel that I should know about it as common knowledge.
Listening: I was amazed to see that you live in Giza!! Why did you live there...? I would like to know about your story sometime!!! I watched a TED talk entitled " Teach every child about food " by Jamie Oliver. At first, he said " Sadly, in the next 18 minutes when I do our chat, four Americans that are alive will be dead from the food that they eat. " He is 34 years old. He from Essex in England and for the last seven years. He worked fairly tirelessly to save lives in my own way as a chef. He exclaimed that they there is a fact that "Diet-related disease" is the biggest killer in the United States because no one teach about food. I think this is a global problem. Not only America but also many countries. I feel eating junk food is typical for most teenagers. His wish is for you to help a strong, sustainable movement to educate every child about food, to inspire families to cook again, and to empower people everywhere to fight obesity.
Writing: I did 5 quick writes this week 1 every day. Little by little, I became to be able to write a lot of words. I'm so glad to feel improving my writing skills.

Hi Ruth!
This is Malcolm, one of the FILA English teachers,
Vocabulary: What is DUO? Could you explain it for me? It is very important to review the vocabulary you are learning. Keep using them as often as you can and in as many different situations as possible. Don't forget to study related words, or other meanings for the words. Using the words consistently will help you remember them, so they will become automatic and you won't have to think about them when you are using them. What was the most interesting word that you have studied so far?
Reading: Steve Jobs was an amazing man. In my opinion, he was able to be creative his whole life. He had many successes and failures, but he didn't lose his creativity. He made his own path rather than following the crowd. What specifically interests you about his thinking?
Listening: Please don't copy and paste from the subtitles and transcript and edit it. Please write in your own words.
I love to watch Jamie Oliver's cooking shows. I have several of his cookbooks. I agree that the lack of knowledge about nutrition is a global problem. Do you eat a well-balanced diet? Do you think university students eat a healthy, well-balanced diet? How will you help him reach his goal?
Writing: Be consistent and your will see your speed increase. How many words was your best score this week?
Keep up the good word!
Malcolm
