Hi Angel, Thank you for posting your questions. You can make vocabulary cards by writing one of the words from the general service list you are not familiar (remember there may be more than one way of using that word) with on to a card. On the back you can write the meaning of the word using an English to English dictionary or by using a Japanese to English dictionary. It's up to you whether you want to add the Japanese equivalent or not. You should also write down example sentences and try to practice using the vocabulary as much as you can. I hope this explanation helps. There is no wrong way of making vocabulary cards. The most effective way is the what you feel is the best for you. I look forward to hearing your first weekly report on your vocabulary study.
Sincerely,
Miyagi H

Hello Miyagi,
Hoping you are good.
I checked the Excel of AWL and I saw many similar words such as "oxidizing" and "oxidizing" that they are in a different collumn. And also, ones in a plural form. How should I know what is the part of the speech of each one?
Thank you so much.

Dear Mr. Miyagi, Do you think it is a good idea to also focus on words that we may have difficulties in spelling though we know its meaning and forms while going through the AWL for the vocabulary assignment?
Thanking you, Jewels.

Hi Patti, Thank you for your question. You asked
"I checked the Excel of AWL and I saw many similar words such as "oxidizing" and "oxidizing" that they are in a different collumn. And also, ones in a plural form. How should I know what is the part of the speech of each one?"
Here are some sample sentences. For example.
The can was oxidizing in the chemical test tube. (What part of speech is the word oxidizing in this sentence? v)
I thought oxidizing chemicals were harmful. (What part of speech is the word oxidizing in this sentence? adj)
We want you to learn how to use the word in different forms. This is why its important to use the words in sentences, look up the words (Google it) and find the correct forms of the words. Learning the word "Oxidize" is not enough because its used in differenty ways/forms. I hope this helps.

Hi Jewel, You asked
"Do you think it is a good idea to also focus on words that we may have difficulties in spelling though we know its meaning and forms while going through the AWL for the vocabulary assignment?"
Yes, I think learning the correct spelling is important because you will be using these words when you start working on your academic essays.
I hope this answers your question.
Sincerely,
Miyagi H

Dear Students, We are quickly approaching the end of our pre-enrollment study program. In order to promote greater interaction between students-students and students-teachers I have changed the format of the FILA Message Board. Please post your weekly reports in the appropriate thread according to the week/date (listed in the title of the thread) and read your classmates threads. Once you have made your posts please comment on your classmates reports. The teachers will read your posts but we will now share in the responsibility of providing feedback with each other. Remember to sign your posts with your names and let's continue to work hard until the end of the study program (March 27th). Good Luck!
Sincerely,
Miyagi H

Hello!
I have a question about "Opening Ceremony." I heard it's nearly as important as graduation. I'm from the U.S. and we don't have opening ceremonies... So what do people do and wear? What kind of formal wear? Thank you! Peace!

Hi Erin, Great question! In Japan opening ceremony is very important. What they wear: Students usually wear black/dark formal wear. Please see link below: www.y-aoyama.jp/sp/freshers/ladies/What they do: Students pledge to study hard. There are usually speeches from former students and letters read wishing the students luck. There are speeches from leaders of the university to encourage the students to work hard. You will get a chance to hear the school song For our faculty we had a group picture outside after the opening ceremony. We will probably have a group picture again but I don't know what time yet. I hope this information helps. Sincerely, Miyagi H
