Hi Everyone, Vocabulary: I reserch 81words this week. But,there is the word which I don't remember. So,I need to remember it this weekend. Reading: The book I’m reading is called "Happy Prince"by Oscar Wilde. This book is easy for me.So, I can understand its story. The main character is Happy Prince who lived in the happy palace and a little swallow.Prince had never seen poor people, ill people and so on.This story is that Prince devote himself and help them with the swallow .I learned the importance of corporation by this book. Now I begin to read other book. Listening: I watched a TED speech "My journey to yo-yo master"by BLACK.He is Japanese. In his speech, he not only talked but also performed his yo-yo technic. So he devoted himself to spread out Japanese culture. Writing: It depends on each theme if I can write many words or not.I usually write also around 100 words in one essay. But,there are many grammar mistakes. So I need to write more and carefully.

Hi Kristine,
Good work on your first weekly report. You wrote that you researched 81 words this week, but can't remember some of them. How are you reviewing these words? Try writing sentences using the words to help you review them. For your quick writes, the important idea is 'quick.' Don't worry about the grammar mistakes. Keep writing your ideas and give many details. Hope this helps!
Thank you for posting and keep up the good work. Please read your classmates reports and comment on their progress. Sincerely,
Valerie Hansford (Val)

This is my second report. Hi Everyone, Vocabulary: I looked for the meaning of 21 words this week. In the last week, only I researched the meanings, not memorized. But In this week,I tried to do the method that everyone make sentences with each words for memorizing. Then I could memorize 81 words. So,I'm continuing it. Reading: The book I’m reading is called "Japan" by Rachel Bladon. This book is written about Japan like history, life style, cultures, technology and so on.So I could deeply understand the good point of Japan again. And now,I began to read "Ghost Stories" by Retold By Rosemary Border.I like "horror".So,this book is very interesting for me!!!!! Do you scare ghost or believe it? ? Listening: I watched a TED speech,"what's wrong with school lunches" by Ann Cooper. She talked about health food.Because ,recently, many people eat fast food.So the obesity is increasing. She thought the solution of it.Our health connected with food.So I must choose to eat healthy food. Writing: I could write more than 100 words,up to 147 words in 10 minutes. Then,in this week,I wrote carefully and tried not to use same word in each essay. So I used many type of conjunction. For example, first, second, third and so on. I want to write more than 150 by using idioms next week.

Hi Everyone, this is my third report.
Vocabulary: I checked 57 words and looked for the meaning of 21 words and memorized by making sentences with these words. I'm going to memorize the rest of 36 words this weekend. Reading: The book I’m reading is called "Ghost Stories" by Retold By Rosemary Border. Not only reading but also checking the words which I don't know. In this book, there are six stories. For example, first,"Smee".It is the story of scary hide and seek.Second,"The Judge's House".It's the story of old house.Third,"The Confession of Charles Linkworth. It's the story of the condemned man.I didn't finish reading another three stories,so I'm going to read them this weekend. Listening: I tried to listen to VOA and TED speech. I strongly impressed the speech,"One Laptop per Child" by Nicholas Nagroponte. He talked about his plan and ideas that he recommends the use of laptop for children. He explained it with the model of laptop which he is thinking. So,I'm excited when I listened to his speech. For me, his speech told me to have a plan and dream. Not only listening but also trying to check unknown words. Writing: I could write around 110words like last week.I can't write more and more. Please tell me how to write more. But I found it helpful to use idioms.

Hi Kristine, Good work! Vocabulary: Great job memorizing and more importantly making sentences with your words. Please try to use these words as you communicate on the message board.
Reading: Please share with us the stories you read. More details you share the better. Please use the vocabulary you learned when you share your stories.
Listening: Yes, one laptop per child would give opportunities for children to learn. There are many good people in the world who are trying to change the world into a more fair and democractic world. What a great idea! Yes, dreaming means having a plan to fulfill that dream. What is your dream?
Writing: 110 words is good. Do you plan before you write? Writing is like dreaming. You should have a clear plan of what you are going to write about before you write.
Good job Kristine. You're doing great. Please continue studying hard and practicing using your vocabulary words.
Sincerely,
Miyagi H

In that time,he heard someone walk close to him. Then an old man who wore a heavy cloak of dark cloth told him to use a map which the old man had. And the old man disappeared with mist. He walked the way the map lead, and he reached a hill that somebody died. It was the old man to die this hill long times ago. The old man led him to his death. This is " The Stranger in the Mist". I can't explain this more easily. Can you understand its story?

I think, the story tell us that we must not easy to accept anything. We need to think about it more carefully. If I'm in this situation,I may use this map without making sure of it.Because also Map doesn't mistake. But We need to judge whether it is true or not.

Hi Everyone, this is my fifth report.
Vocabulary: I made new vocabulary cards. I couldn't memorize it in this week. I spent this week for lazy. I have to use time more profitable in this weekend . Reading: I'm reading "Sherlock Holmes Short Stories" written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In this book, all sorts of people visit Sherlock Holmes who is the great detective. Then, he and Dr Watson who is always with him solve many problems. I finished reading three stories.I'm going to explain one of them. A person who is a doctor has trouble of one of his patient who has catalepsy. One day, the patient killed himself. A doctor think the reason is by his catalepsy. But there are some unusual points. Then Holmes realize that he was murdered by somebody. In the end, he could solve the accident. When I read it, I could know special words like catalepsy. And I like mystery story, so I interested in this books. Listening: I listened TED speeches. One of my listening,"I am the son of a terrorist. Here's how I chose peace."by Zak Ebrahim. His story impressed my mind. He spent cruel life. He was bullied and despised by people around him.So, he insisted that "I'm not my father.I am Zak Ebrahim.". When I listened it, I was thought that I can't be other. They can't be me. Writing: I could write around 140 words this week.I couldn't reach my aim that I want to write about 150 words. But I couldn't. So I will do that in this weekend.

Dear Kristine, Thank you for posting your weekly report.
Vocabulary: Yes, this is one of the reasons we are having this self-study program. We want our students to be good at time management and autonomous learning. Its important to make learning a habit. Once you enter FILA you will struggle if you are not accustomed to managing your time. Please try to stay consistent in your vocabulary learning.
Reading: Can you share with us how Holmes solved the mystery?
Listening: I'm sorry but I couldn't understand what you wrote. What did you mean by "I listened it, I was thought that I can't be other. They can't be me." Please replace the pronouns with the nouns you are referring to.
Writing: Did you mean "I wrote 140 words per quick type?" OK, I hope you reach your goal of 150 words next week.
Good job making your weekly post. You're doing great Kristine. Please keep up the good work.
Sincerely,
Miyagi H

I need to explain more intelligible to everyone. I want to explain again. Reading: A person who is a doctor has trouble of one of his patient who has catalepsy. One day, the patient killed himself. Everyone thought he committed suicide by hanging himself. A doctor thought the reason is by his catalepsy. But there are some unusual points. Why did he killed himself?why did he smoke before he kill himself? I think it is mystery point that his death is wrapped in mystery. In the end, Holmes realized that he was murdered by somebody. Then,he could catch the criminal and solve the accident.
Listening: When I listened his speech,I agree with his thinking that " you couldn't be me,and I couldn't be you." It means that each of us is deferent with other person. Can you understand my explanation??

Hi Everyone, this is my sixth report.
Vocabulary: I couldn't memorize many words in this week. But I could memorize 5 words.I think it is important to memorize words not randomly but surely. Reading: I'm reading "Sherlock Holmes Short Stories" written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I'm sorry I couldn't understand the rest of the story. So,in this weekend, I'm going to read it again. Then, I will explain it in next weekly report. Listening: I listened TED speeches. One of my listening is "Txtng is killing language.JK!!!" by John Mcwhorter. He talked about language used amount young people.Young people often use word with different meaning. I'm sure it is true. Now we can write the way we talk. Not only English people but also Japanese people. I think it is important to have to protect real meaning.
Writing: I could write about 150 words. I reached my aim in this week. But the uninteresting topics, I couldn't write more than 130 words.

Hi Kristine!
This is Malcolm, one of the FILA English teachers.
Breathe! Don't get frustrated with your English study. It is a long race; you have to pace yourself. The past is past, don't stay in the past, This week is a new week. Start again.
Five words are fine. Using the words consistently will help you remember them, so they will become automatic, and you won't have to think about them when you are using them. What was the most interesting word that you studied?
Sometimes you just have to read things again, it happens to me too!
Texting is like a different language with the abbreviations and emoji. What are some example that you use and what are the meanings in "normal" language?
Be consistent! Little by little, your writing will get faster. Don't give up!
You can do it!
Malcolm

Hi Everyone, this is my seventh report.
Vocabulary: I could memorize 20 words. I found new way that I remember words. So I memorized words by not only making sentence with these words but also connecting a word with other similar word like necessity(noun)→necessary(proverb). Reading: I finished reading "Sherlock Holmes Short Stories" written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I'm going to explain one of the story.A man was found dead. His body showed signs of extreme violence. On the same night his servant and his cook disappeared. They had something to do with the murder. Holmes and Watson detected the accident with police. Listening: I listened BBC news radio. It was very difficult to hear what they feature about. But I could hear some words, so I imaged what they said. For example, when I heard name of Mr.Plushenko, I imaged that they talked about skating.
Writing: I could write 164, this is my best in this week and also I could write about 150 words in ten minutes. Because in this week , almost all of theme was that I was asked reasons. So, I could write many words like these topics.

Hi Kristine. Malcolm here. Vocabulary: Good job! Yes, if you learn one word you can actually know several words which are related. Also try to use the words that you are learning. Use them or lose them! What ws the most interesting word you learned this week? Reading: Do you like mysteries? Do you try to figure out who did the crime before the book tells you? Listening: News can be a little difficult to listen to. Are you listening to simplified news stories? Here are some sites with easier levels of stories: www.cnn.com/US/studentnews/quick.guide/archive/learningenglish.voanews.com/www.breakingnewsenglish.com/index.htmlThese have news stories that have different levels. You can find one that is good for you that won't discourage you from listening to English. Try it, you may find it easier. Writing: Good job with the Quick Writes. Keep up the good work. Little by little! Malcolm
