Dear Students, We are quickly approaching the end of our pre-enrollment study program. In order to promote greater interaction between students-students and students-teachers I have changed the format of the FILA Message Board. Please post your weekly reports in the appropriate thread according to the week/date (listed in the title of the thread) and read your classmates threads. Once you have made your posts please comment on your classmates reports. The teachers will read your posts but we will now share in the responsibility of providing feedback with each other. Remember to sign your posts with your names and let's continue to work hard until the end of the study program (March 27th). Good Luck!

Post by Erin on Mar 6, 2015 9:34:10 GMT 9
Hello! I'm Erin. Hope all is well and joyful.
Vocabulary: Learned 15 words this week. I like learning new vocabulary while reading or hearing other people use them. Just the other day I heard someone use philanthropic. I didn’t know what it meant, but now that I do, I quite like it. That’s my favorite word of the week. I think people should be more philanthropic and give back to the community in however way they can.
Reading: ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ is amusing as well as relatable. Charlie is a wallflower. A wallflower is someone who see’s things, keeps quiet about them, and understands. I believe that I am a wallflower, though not all the time. I am shy, but I also like to take part and engage with people. I like to keep quiet by listening and absorbing the information around me, which makes me an introverted person kind of like Charlie’s character. I find the book amusing because it’s as if Charlie is writing these letters to me. It’s funny in that he talks about normal things such friends and experiencing life as it goes on, but in a very innocent and Charlie-esque way. He becomes friends with Sam and Patrick (couple years older than Charlie) and it’s wonderful because they accept him without question. One of my favorite parts of the book was when Charlie described this moment of feeling infinite while driving into a tunnel and out into the lights of downtown with Patrick and Sam.
Listening: I listened to another interesting TED Talk about marine life. I listened to “Save the Oceans, Feed the World” by marine biologist Jackie Savitz. In her talk she explains her focus on the world’s oceans and how it is related to feeding the hungry. By healing the oceans people can make more food. Already in the world fish populations are declining, but there are ways to fix it. Savitz describes that it is imperative to , 1)Have fishing quotas 2)Reduce by catch or any unnecessary animals caught 3)Protect habitats especially in places where fish reproduce. By doing this it will not only help the ocean’s declining populations, but it will also help feed the hungry. Fish is more cost effective than agriculture, and easier to produce. It also has a lower carbon footprint unlike cows. So, the healthier the oceans are the more food and fish there will be to feed people.
Writing: Writing is the same as last week. Again, depending on the topics the word count would vary, around 330-370 words.
I can't wait to meet you guys. Also, I have a question about "Opening Ceremony." I heard it's nearly as important as graduation. I'm from the U.S. and we don't have opening ceremonies... So what do people do and wear? What kind of formal wear? Thank you! Peace!

Hi,everyon, I'm Joy
Vocabulary: I learned over 70 new words this week. There were many words that were difficult to remember at once. Especially, I mistook "attribute" for "atribute". I should be careful not to omit any letter. My favorite word is "bold" because it has two meanings. They differ according to how to pronounce.
Reading: I read a book, "Cleo" by HELEN BROWN. Although I don't finish reading it, I like this book. This book consists of small contents, so it is easy to well. However there are many difficult words that are related in aimal's behavior. A cat and a boy appear in this story. Since, I can't understand the story well and I don't know it is true, perhaps both of them lost their brother. The cat bahaves as if he were a human. I'm sorry, but I can't explain its context in detail. I would like to understand the story by I finish reading it.
LIstening: I listened the speech by Steve Jobs at Stanford University. He sppeched three stories. The first story is about connecting the dots. He told students about his life. While he was a student, he dropped college and found his turning point. One of his turning point was a calligraphy class. In this story, I was most impressed by the phrase," believing the dots will connect down the road, it gives you confidence to follow your heart". When I heard this phrase, I decided to have confidence about my perseverance to study. The second story is about love and loss. He speeched about his bussiness life. He turned a dismissal from Apple into a chance to improve his life. In this story, my favorite phrase is "keep looking until you find it( it means what I love). Don't settle" Third story is about death. He faced with risk of death. He was diagnosed as cancer, but fortunatelly his doctor said thet it was possible to cure cancer with surgery and he had the surgery. When he was speeching at Stanford University, he had been fine. He said, " most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition". I was encouraged by this phrase because I can't follow my honest feelings sometimes. I thought I would found what I have interest and try to do anything as many as possible.
Writing: I wrote 7 types this week. I can't yet type words without looking at keyboard. I typed about 190 words. I would like to write more quickly and correctly.
To, Erin Yes! Opening CEremony is important and wonderful. Girls wear a typical dark suit or suits in pastel colors such as white or pink.

Hi, I’m Mikaela.
This is my weekly report. Vocabulary I learned 50new words.
Reading I am reading “Matilda”. This story is about a girl who is clever and unusual. She is little but she likes reading and always has books. Her parents aren’t interested in her at all. She tried to punish parents who are mean to her. It was funny and smart way. I'll keep on reading the next chapter.
Listening I watched “color blind or color brave?” by Mellody Hobson. She said we have to be color brave and have a real conversation about race with honesty and understanding and courage because our businesses and our products and science research will be better with greater diversity. I agree with her idea. In fact, we in Japan rarely recognize a problem of race. I can’t imagine that how depressed she has been in her life. But I’d like to try to understand her feeling. And I think we should not have misconceptions instead of trying to understand others who doesn’t look you and doesn’t come from where you come from. It is difficult to understand different cultures from yours but nothing will change if we don’t change way of approaching race problem.
And I watched “In our baby’s illness, a life lesson” by Rodeo and Francesca. They have a son who had a serious problem; brain injury. So his left side of body isn’t working well. They were really feeling that the only real product of their life was a failure and they went down. But one day when their son, Mario was continuing a rehabilitation, they changed the perspective and become a better mirror for Mario. In this video, their son Mario came on the stage. He was only 3years old, but he was able to walk and move his left side. And he just smiled. I realized his smile made a chance that they noticed Mario was not a missing but an opportunity to improve their life. This video was really impressing.
Writing I did 7 quick typing. I wrote about150 words. The number of words I typed depends on topics.
As Joy told, girls wear black or pastel suit when opening ceremony. But most wear pastel suit at Soka universty.

Hello! I'm Michelle:)
Vocabulary: I learned about 35 new words this week.It is difficult for me to learn the meaning of a new word.
Reading: I'm reading"Gulliver's Travels"by Jonathan Swift.Gulliver begins his first journey in 1699 and, after a storm at sea,he finds himself in a country called Lilliput, where the people are only fifteen centimetres tall... When I read this part, I was surprised very much.If the country where a human being of 15 centimeters lives in is true, I want to go there.
Listening: I watched a TED Talk entitled "How butterflies self-medicate" by Jaap de Roode. He said butterflie's mother can lay their eggs on medicinal milkweed that will make their future offspring less sick. I was very surprised about it,because I think these are animals that are very small and I think of them as very simple. They have tiny little brains. That's why I don't think they can do this very sophisticated medication.
Writing: I did 7 quick writes this week 1 every day. I could write about 120 words.
I want to meet FILA members very much!

Hello! I'm Aurora!
Vocabulary I learned 50 words. I made 20 sentences using these words. I was interested in the word Correspond. This mean is together something. I want to memorize more difficult words.
Reading I read two books.Anne of Green Gables by L.M.Montgomery and I Am a Cat by Soseki Natsume.(translated by R.F.Zufelt). I am a cat is a Japanese book but, this book is written by English. The main character is a cat. He had no name.He was a homeless cat. People touched him or hugging him.but nobody picked up to their house. One day, the cat was picked up from the man. He was called man of the house. He had mental illness but he had curious to do anything. The cat and the man live in the same space, but they felt or looked things from each point of view. That's because they weren't same animal. In my opinion, cats are really smart. In my town, there is a lot of homeless cats. They have no house so, they always go to the sunny place and sleep. They help each other to eat foods. For example, climbing trees to catch persimmons for kittens. I always call out to cats Hello. Then they come. They know humans words! This is amazing!
Listening I listened voa. The tittle is Top ten cities with the world's worst traffic. Cars and bikes are very comfortable to go somewhere, but they bring us traffic jam. According to this news, in Jakarta, Indonesia has the worst traffic jam in the world. Traffic jams give us a lot of problem, for example, the air pollution will be increase and people have stress from traffic. How to stop traffic jam? One thing is to supply more public transportation. If the government will make more public transportation, like buses, trains, traffic jam will be decrease. Next thing is to charge money to drive in certain parts of a city.People who drive will be not to use cars or bikes. In my opinion, little device will be the key of reducing traffic jam.
Writing I wrote about my high school. The best words count was 200. I want to study English harder to write quickly as soon as possible,so I will keep writing it!
Thank you for reading!

Post by Malia on Mar 6, 2015 22:57:30 GMT 9
Hi, I am Malia. This is my weekly report.
Vocabulary: I learned 40 words this week. I need not only memorize words but also use them.
Reading: this week, I read many books. These were thin and written in easy English. One of these is "the town mouse and the country mouse". This story is one of Aesop's fable. The country mouse went to the town with the town one. The town one guided the country one around the town. They ate delicious food in the town. The country one became happy because the country one had not are such a delicious food ever. But dogs showed up in front of them. The country one felt scary. Then, although such delicious food were not in the country, the country one more like the country than the town. The town was dangerous. What I learned from this story is that the criterion of happiness is different from each person. The town one more focused on food than living safely. While the country one more focused on living safely than food. I think there is no right thing or happiness for everyone. When I help someone, I should consider someone's situation.
Listening: I couldn't listen to programs. Listening is weak point for me. So I will listen to programs everyday next week.
Writing: I wrote 4 quick writes this week. I was able to write 167 words. This is the highest score since I started this assignment. I wrote "What do you miss about your elementary school life?" Recently, I met my friends who was in the same elementary school. I remembered a lot of memories in my elementary school because I talked about our elementary school life with them. The time I talked with old friends was very enjoyable!!

Hi, everyone!
Vocabulary: I learned over 50 words. I couldn't memorize than last week.
Reading: I'm reading "What I wish I knew when I was 20". Chapter-5 was written about quitting. Quitting project or product is very difficult choice for us. However it said, "You need to know when to stop pounding on an idea that isn't working and when to move on something new". There are actually many ways to turn a failure into success. In my opinion, it is necessary to have the courage to change or quit but challenging to obstacles which are in front of us is also important.
Listening: I listened about "Poverty and Wealth" on BBC learning English. The number of people living in extreme poverty has decreased in recent decades. The worlds is getting richer. Bill Gates, who is the founder of Microsoft, established a institution to help poor. He thinks that rich people should be "philanthropic" and help to reduce poverty. I expect that his foundation contribute to diminish poverty.
Writing: My best numbers of words in this week is about 170. I'll keep on trying.
Thank you!

Hello!
Vocabulary: I learned 78words this week. The one of them is Uncle Sam. Before I learned this word, I thought that it meant only a name. So I was surprised when I knew it.
Reading: I finished reading “This is Facebook!”. I could learn how to use Facebook and its history. Facebook have many good points. For example, we can keep in touch with people more easily and quicker. But it have also bad points that people spend too much time on Facebook. I don’t use Facebook now. I want to start using Facebook but I have only time of studying and praying. If I will have enough time, I will use Facebook.
Listening I watched one video The beauty and diversity of Muslim life by Bassam Tariq. I learned from this video that Muslim have a beautiful culture. I want to learn foreign culture like that. I also listened BBC learning. I listened “Should tourists go to Antarctica?”. In this radio, the speakers said that Antarctica is a beautiful and dangerous place. I want to visit there.
Writing: I wrote three quick writes this week. I could write 178words at most.
I determine to study harder next week! Thank you!

Hey everyone! I'm Chelsey. Vocabulary: I've learnt 20 new words this week. Reading: I haven't finished reading my book from the previous week, and I'll try finishing it by this weekend. The book that I'll be reading next is "The Fault In Our Stars" by John Green. This book is really popular, and the movie was a big hit, everyone couldn't stop talking about it. It made me want to read it before I watch the movie so I bought the book and i'm really excited to read it. It's a story about a girl who had cancer who met another guy also with cancer through a cancer support group. Listening: I've listened to "why you will fail to have a great career" by Larry Smith. He starts off by saying that people always said, to get great jobs, we have to go after our passion and dreams. Some people haven't found them yet, but even for most people who do, they would have trouble getting a great jobs too because most of the times in the end, they decide not to pursue it. He also urged people who are still searching for their passion to not settle just for interests but for passion, something that they're truly passionate about. Interest is something that just sparks our curiosity but passion is something that will give us the drive to continue what we do. It's a funny talk that motivates us to go for we're passionate about before we regret in the future for not doing it. Writing: I did five quick writes this week. My word counts for this week is 230-299. I hope to get past 300 next week. Time flies so fast, only three more weeks till all of us meet

Hello guys! Here is my weekly report. I asked some questions from the last report and I wish someone could answer them for me. Vocabulary: - I managed learning more 37 new words, writing down the different meaning, part of speech (verb, noun, etc.) and examples. I love the word “watershed” and I could make this sentence “The Opening Ceremony will mark a watershed in my life!” I am looking forward to April 2nd! And also, I like the word “approach” because I can say that my depart flight to Japan is approaching. I am starting getting anxious.
Writing: I wrote 5 quick writes. - “Write about a place you have visited.” (151 words) It was really challenge because I wrote about the Leonardo da Vinci exhibition that I visited two weeks ago and I did not remember about all the details and projects that I saw there. Moreover, it is more technical words and I could not remember the words to explain what I had seen. - “What country would you like to visit? Why” (234 words) It was a good topic to write because I love travelling and I really want to visit Europe. I could express my goals on this writing. - “Do you like Tokyo? Why or why not?” (232 words) It was ok to write because I have been searching more about Japan and Tokyo. I could write some attractions that I get excited about Tokyo and why I will love going there. - “Write about a vacation you took with your family or friends” (305 words) I loved writing about this topic because I talked about the first trip that I did with my friends. It was really funny and I had good moments. - “If you could travel to a different country, where would you go? Why?” (228 words) I felt that it was a familiar topic in compared with the others so I tried to write about something different.
Listening: I listed to 3 TED Talks this week - “The family I lost in North Korea. And the family I gained.” It was deeply emotional for me because it shows us a reality that is still true for most of North Korean people. I could get some words that he said which I learned from my vocabulary list, such as “begging off was not the solution”. One of his lessons was that hope kept him alive and it’s something that no one can give to you. You need to have it and keep it. That’s what makes him survive. - “My simple invention, designed to keep my grandfather safe.” The TED Speaker is Kenneth Shinozuka. His speech was really encouraged because I also have a grandmother living with me. Even if she does not have the same illness than his grandfather, she is an elderly lady, having some injuries e etc. I wish I could have the ability to create machines or some technologic to help her as he did. Who knows… - “Fighting with nonviolence” It was speech with so much inspiration. Her name is Sailla Elworthy and she is a pacifist since she was younger. And she realized that violence against violence does not work and anger is like gasoline that can impulse us for something effective. She also affirmed that the first change that we need to take is to discover what is our weak point and we have responsibilities to take. It was inspiring.
Reading: I managed reading 3 BBC news. - “Who is Mohammed Emwazi?” It was a challenge reading because I did not understand at first the context of the text. Then, I decided to search more about. - “The rise of Islamic State” I could see that everything is related to what had happened before. There are a lot of conflicts and different context that influenced what is the Islamic State. I know that I need to learn more about it because it is a complex topic. - “Why India gang-rape film row is extraordinary.” It just talks about the good points of a movie that is banned in India by the government, which India’s population have not agreed with this action. I am trying to read and listening about these subjects from India but it is also a complex topic.

Hello everybody!
This week I could improve more than the last one, as I had more time to do my activities.
Vocabulary: I've learned and practiced 30 words! The words which most caught my attention was 'compelling' that is an adjective. This words has two meanings: 1)interesting or exciting enough to keep your attention completely, for instance: a compelling story; 2) able to persuade someone to do something or persuade them that something is true, for example: there was a compelling evidence in her defense.
Reading: I continue reading the book 'Portions from a Wine-Stained Notebook' from Charles Bukowski. The chapter I read this week is called 'Hard without music', and again the was story was so gripping and compelling. What I most like about Bukowski chronicles is that the beginning of the text doesn't has a real beginning. It generally goes to the beginning when the text is in the middle, and it makes me curious about what is the whole point of the story. I found very peculiar how the main character feels the music - he firstly thinks that music written by Beethoven and others composers is not a 'human sound', and he likes to feel the music entering into his body slowly, barely noticing it, not to kill it.
Listening: I've listened to 5 TED talks, but the one that I most liked was ''How I Harnessed the Wind' by William Kamkwamba. He is a boy from Malawi, a country of Oriental Africa. His country is stricken by drought and every citizen was dying of hunger. On the second day of school he had to pay the tuition fee, but he had no money, otherwise he and his family would die. Then he decided to go on a library and end up studying a particular physics book which teaches how to build up a windmill could pump water and generate electricity. Without any resources, he went to a scrapheap and collected material that could be adapted and used. After his accomplishment, he was becoming success and could change his situation. His final message is 'no matter what happens, don't give up'. His story encouraged me not to give up easily. If you don't struggle, you won't be able to save you neither the others.
Writing: This week I could 5 quick writes and gladly, I've improved to 350 words! I'm happy to see my development in quick writing, which for me, is one of the most challenging tasks.
See you all next week!
